| Holy Family Ministries News YOU'RE INVITED... The John Buck Company will host its 19th annual Spring Fling on Thursday, June 21st, 2007. This event attracts 2500 guests each year. Last year, over $500,000 was raised for local charities. This year, Holy Family Ministries was selected to receive half of the event’s proceeds. Specifically, funds will go toward the construction of the new Holy Family Ministries Center, a permanent home for Holy Family Lutheran School and our out-of-school youth development programs. This new facility will double Holy Family’s capacity to make a difference to the children in underserved communities. Come on out and support Holy Family at this fun event, featuring the Big Draw raffle, live music, restaurant stations, and beverages. Tickets are $100 each and are available by contacting Margaret at (847) 441-4115 x5 or mflanagan@sisna.com. HOLY FAMILY BREAKS GROUND FOR NEW HOLY FAMILY MINISTRIES CENTER Holy Family celebrated the groundbreaking for the new Holy Family Ministries Center on April 3rd,, 2007. Several leaders of the community and dignitaries spoke, including Ray McCaskey, CEO of Blue-Cross Blue-Shield of Illinois, Kent Swanson, CFO of The John Buck Company, Congressman Danny Davis, and Alderman Michael Chandler. First grade student D’Angelo spoke about why the students need a new school. Also, the gospel choir performed “A Brighter Day.” The entire student body was present to recite the school’s mission statement and “Go-Getters” cheer: “We don’t quit we go and get, we’re the Go-Getters, Go-to-Go-Getters (repeat). One…two…three and we Go-Go-Go. Ask us do we give up and we say NO! I can’t give up, no, ‘cause I’m not a quitter. Why? ‘Cause I’m a Go-Getter!” The ceremony was emceed by Holy Family’s Board Chairman John Mjoseth, and Building Hope Committee chairman Joe Pringle also addressed the audience. HOLY FAMILY MINISTRIES CLOSES ON LAND January 9th was a very special day in Holy Family's history. That's when Susan Work, President of HFM, and Kristin Dean, President of the Homan Arthington Foundation, inked the agreement to close on 1.22 acres of land at the Homan Square campus in North Lawndale, future site of the new Holy Family Ministries Center. The center will house Holy Family Lutheran School, an After-School Program, a summer camp, summer school, a pre-school/daycare, and a Saturday algebra enrichment program. Groundbreaking will take place April 3rd. CORE CABRINI BUILDING CLOSES; HOLY FAMILY PROGRAM GOING STRONG In "Visions of Hope as Sun Sets on Cabrini," (Chicago Tribune, 1/10/07) Mary Schmich wrote about the closing of the 1015-1017 North Larrabee building in December. This building is located just across the street from Holy Family Church, site of our Cabrini After-School Program(ASP). Many are wondering how this affects Holy Family. The short answer is "not so much." While about half of our Cabrini ASP kids were living in the 1015-1017 building, only two of them have left the program as a result of relocation. This represents only about 5% of the 35-40 kids who attend regularly. That leaves plenty of active children in the program at this site whose parents seek a safe place where their children can learn and grow. Holy Family's staff, led by Pastor Infelt, provides just that. AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS BIGGER & BUSIER THAN EVER Our West Side and Near North after-school programs are hopping, with 150 students participating! The Near North program has record enrollment of about 60, with average daily attendance of 48. The revitalization of the area surrounding Cabrini Green has brought with it new interest in our program, and we are addressing that interest by picking up and taking home children who live within a 10-block radius of our program site. The children rotate daily in small groups to activities including Technology Lab, LitART Reading program, Homework Help/Tutoring, and Games & Crafts. PASTOR CHUCK TO BE HONORED BY WHEAT RIDGE MINISTRIES Wheat Ridge Ministries, an independent Lutheran charitable organization that provides support for new church-related health and hope ministries, will be honoring Pastor Chuck Infelt at their annual Seeds of Hope Award Dinner on Saturday, February 3rd, 2007. The Seeds of Hope Awards recognize individuals whose outstanding service to health, hope and healing ministries exemplifies the Wheat Ridge mission of "seeding health and hope in the name of the healing Christ." SUMMER CAMPS About 50 campers, our Hope Alive and Holy Family Lutheran School young people, had adventures such as canoeing, milking goats, cooking over a campfire, and “creekstomping” at 7 different camps during the summer. In addition, about 50 day-campers learned new computer skills, produced and presented a talent show, and played lots of basketball during 3 different week-long camps that took place in Cabrini. Also, visiting youth groups conducted 3 weeks of bible school for interested youth. BACK TO SCHOOL Classes resumed on August 21st at Holy Family Lutheran School (HFLS) with all grades (K-8) returning to school that day. Enrollment will again be at capacity. Holy Family hired two new teachers this year, Charles Warner of Villa Park will teach Middle School Math, and Abbey Zebraitis of Chicago will teach 2nd grade. More on these teachers in the next Beacon. SUMMER BENEFIT RAISES FUNDS & FRIENDS Over 100 people attended Holy Family’s Summer Benefit in a private room at John Barleycorns on Friday, June 2nd. The event raised about $10,000 for Holy Family Lutheran School. A week’s stay in Hilton Head was raffled off as the grand prize. The program featured a DVD showing why Holy Family needs a new home. For a copy of the DVD, please email info@holyfamilyministries.org. $125,000 RAISED AT SPRING BENEFIT; MARKS ALMOST A 20% INCREASE OVER LAST YEAR Holy Family's Spring Benefit 2006 rasied a record $125,000 for Holy Family School tuition assistance funds. The expansive silent and live auctions, the fun and funny "Heads-N-Tails" game, and the company of old and new friends provided enjoyment for the guests. The evening's program began with vocal selections by noted Chicago musician Carmen Stokes and Holy Family Lutheran School's own Gospel Choir, followed by a capital campaign update by Building Hope Chairman Joe Pringle. Last but certainly not least a rousing speech by 3rd grader Damenisha about why Holy Family students need a new school brought the house to its feet in loud applause. BUILDING HOPE RECEIVES DONATION BY THE SEARLE FAMILY FUNDS AT THE CCT Building Hope, the project to construct a permanent home for Holy Family School, received a half-million dollar donation from the Searle Funds At The Chicago Community Trust [CCT]. A celebration was held on April 4th featuring remarks by philanthropist Nancy Searle and by Terry Mazaney, CEO of the Chicgao Community Trust, and emceed by John Mjoseth, Chairman of Holy Family Ministries' Board of Directors. The check was acccepted by Building Hope Chairman Joe Pringle. Holy Family School's Gospel Choir performed and a 3rd grade student made acceptance remarks on behalf of the student body. BUILDING HOPE ON THE WEST SIDE: PLAN TO CONSTRUCT NEW SCHOOL FACILITY UNVEILED In May, 2005, Holy Family Ministries announced plans to build a new school at Homan Square on Chicago's West Side that will accommodate 300 students. "Constructing a permanent home for the school is a logical next step for Holy Family," said Susan Work, President of Holy Family Ministries. A waiting list to get in, overcrowding, and a lack of appropriate space to facilitate art, music, and gym classes are just some of the problems faced in the current rented space.
FRIENDRAISING & FUN AT HOLY FAMILY'S SUMMER BENEFIT Many new friends were present on April 29th at the 3rd annual downtown benefit, a special event for the young and young-at-heart. Cocktails and appetizers were served at John Barleycorn's on Clark Street. A trip for two to St. Thomas was raffled off to a lucky winner, and a silent auction was held with many fun items such as Cubs tickets and restaurant gift certificates. Proceeds of the event go to Holy Family Lutheran School’s Tuition Assistance Fund.
