Since 1992, Hope Alive has offered essential youth development programs for
children growing up in low-income neighborhoods:
After-school and Summer Enrichment Program--for elementary-age children,
where children are supported by professionals from the Adler School of Professional
Psychology. The curriculum features a Lit Art program which utilizes popular
children's literature to enrich children's reading comprehension, develop vocabulary skills,
and help children fall in love with reading.
Educational software is used in the computer lab featuring networked computers with
Internet service for children's academic advancement and technological literacy
A Career Development Club teaches teens communication, presentation, and leadership
skills critical to postsecondary success and meaningful employment
The Boys in the Hood Club, which provides at-risk boys an attractive alternative
to gang affiliation
The Girls in the Hood Club, which offers at-risk girls a career-focused program
designed to encourage education and to discourage teen motherhood
A summer camp program for teens as well as for younger children. Camp partners have
included Kids Across America in Missouri, EWALU in Iowa, and Lutherdale in Wisconsin.
An Iowa Exchange
HOPE ALIVE Volunteer Program
Beginning in 1989, over 27,000 volunteers participated in the Hope Alive program, which
focused on improving the quality of living in Chicago's public housing developments.
An inner-city immersion program, BridgeBuilders welcomed volunteers in to paint, clean,
or do grounds work, projects that raised community standards and provide a more attractive
environment for children growing up in public housing.
BridgeBuilders was rewarding for residents and spiritually and culturally enriching for volunteers. Having focused on the
Cabrini Green neighborhood in the past, BridgeBuilders is looking to expand its reach to
public housing on the West Side. Watch for more information here soon.
