Welcome to Holy Family Ministries

This is our mission --

"In partnership with Chicago's low-income communities, we provide safe havens where children and adults learn, grow spiritually, find hope, and broaden life skills."
(June, 2005)

And this is our proud history --

In 1963, a Lutheran pastor went door-to-door inviting the 14,000 residents of Chicago's Cabrini-Green public housing community to join him in a new community of faith at the corner of Larrabee and Hobbie, which they later named Holy Family Lutheran Church.

The parishioners' first mission activity was to support the civil rights movement, proudly marching in the streets of Chicago with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In subsequent years, parishioners founded a variety of youth development and other programs to enrich the lives and broaden opportunities for Cabrini Green and West Side youth and their families.

In 1999, Holy Family Ministries was founded as an independant 501(c)(3) public charity.

These are the programs of Holy Family Ministries:
  • Holy Family Lutheran School, founded in 1985, opens the doors of private education to families who may otherwise be closed out for financial reasons
  • Hope Alive After-School Programs provide after-school reading enrichment, homework help, technology tutoring, professional counseling, and nutritious snacks for children from Jenner, Schiller, Manniere, and Holy Family Lutheran Schools
  • Hope Alive Youth Development Programs include, Boys In the 'Hood club, Girls In the 'Hood Club, Summer Sleep-Away Camp, Computer Lab, Career Development for teens, rural Iowa exchange program, and summer technology camp
  • Adult Programs include the Seniors Club, the Moms' Club, and the Stronger Than the Streets Men's Club in Cabrini Green
Our future:

Cabrini Green: Holy Family Ministries will continue to provide support and services to low-income Near North residents as the Cabrini-Green community transforms into a racially and economically diverse community. Our Hope Alive program focus will be in the Chicago Avenue row houses and other subsidized and public housing in the area.

West Side: At the same time, we are expanding our West Side programming. HFM is currently engaged in Building Hope, a capital campaign for a new service center. This 45,000 square-foot facility will open in North Lawndale in 2007, serving all West Side children. It will be an excellent base from which to offer programs that respond to community needs in North Lawndale and surrounding communities, and will provide a much-needed permanent home for Holy Family Lutheran School.
